There is so much emotional Intelligence in Alicia Key's 'Never Felt This Way (Interlude) from the 'Songs in A Minor' album she released in 2001!'
Let's get into these lyrics shall we?
Here are the lyrics in the opening line of the song:
"There will never come a day, You will ever hear me say; That I want, or need to be without you. I wanna give my all..."
The emotional Intelligence is a little hidden in this part of the song. 'Wants' and 'Needs' are different levels of emotional standards and can be seen as emotional intelligence. Think about it. You NEED water. And if you don't get water, it will make your body react in a certain way that may negatively effect your emotions or how you 'feel.' It is fair to say that your 'needs' moreso than you 'wants' are tied closely to your emotional intelligence and wellness.
According to Oxford Language, Emotional Intelligence is defined as:
The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
Pay attention to the part of the lyrics where Alicia is 'expressing her emotions' in her 'interpersonal relationships. The lyrics state that she 'wants to give her all.' That is a desire and desires are closely tied to one's emotions. Understanding this is emotionally intelligent. Also pay attention to the lyrics before that. She says ' ...that I want or need to be without you.' This is an expression of emotions and that is an example not only of emotionally wellness but emotional intelligence, too!
"Because your arms, they keep away the lonelys."
Janet Jackson's 'I Get So Lonely' comes to mind when this part comes around. 'Your arms keep away the lonelys' sounds like the presence of whoever has those arms chases the 'feelings of loneliness' away. Her ability to understand how that person's presence effects her emotionally is a great example of emotional intelligence.
Let's dig into some more lyrics, Cutie:
"Cause I never felt this way about loving, No. Never felt so good. Baby. Never felt this way about loving. It feels so good."
THIS IS SO GOOD, CUTIE! You KNOW we want you to 'Feel Cute™' and feeling cute means 'Feeling Good, right? This is why this part is so important! If you have people in your life, be it platonic or romantic, you need to be aware of how their presence in your life makes you 'Feel.' If you need examples, study this part. Pay attention to how present the expression of her emotions are in the lyrics. It's clear. It's to the point. Easy to understand. Keep these things in mind when you go out there and express your emotions in a safe environment, Cutie and HEAVY on the 'safe' part.
