There is so much emotional Intelligence in Jazmine Sullivan's 'Lions, Tiger's & Bears!' Let's get into these lyrics shall we?
Here are the lyrics in the opening hook:
"I'm not scared of lions and tigers and bears (oh my). But I'm scared of (loving you) I'm not scared to perform at a sold out affair (that's right) But I'm scared of (loving you) Am I the only one who thinks it's an impossible task? Why it don't last? Is that too much to ask? Why do we love love, when love seems to hate us?"
So much emotional intelligence is packed in this hook! Pay attention to how clear she is with her feelings. What is she scared of? She's scare of loving her love interest! Why do we love love? Love seems to hate us! This is emotional Intelligence! She's pondering emotions right there in the lyrics.
According to Oxford Language, Emotional Intelligence is defined as:
The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
Pay attention to the part of the lyrics where Jazmine talks about what she is and isn't scare of. The very fact that she knows what she's scared of is considered Emotional Intelligence since she is 'aware' of her emotions in that particular situation.
Let's look at other Emotionally intelligent parts of the song.
"Just 'cause I love you and you love me; It doesn't mean that that we're meant to be; I can climb mountains, swim cross the seas; But the most frightening thing is you and me"
Look at what Jazmine writes:
"The MOST FRIGHTENING thing is YOU AND ME."
Have you ever experienced being scared to be in love with someone? Have you ever been scared that they may hurt you? Artists Syd and Lucky Daye released a song called 'CYBAH' which stands for 'Can You Break A Heart?' and it's an excellent example of someone who is scared to love for fear of getting hurt. Be sure to check out that song for more emotional IQ since it's talking about fear.
Let's dig into some more lyrics, Cutie:
"Most circumstances, I know my fate; But in this love thing I don't get the game; Why does it feel like those who give in; They only wind up losing a friend?"
Did you catch that? What is she scared of??? SHE'S SCARED OF LOSING A FRIEND! That's a valid fear! When you take a relationship to the next level, it's normal to be invested in how well it will go. This is a great example of emotional intelligence because she illustrates the 'capacity to express one's emotions.' When you can tap into your emotions and express how you feel, that is an act of emotional intelligence and wellness.
