MARY J. BLIGE'S 'BE HAPPY'

There is emotional Intelligence in Mary J. Blige's 'Be Happy' track from her 'My Life' Album.

Let's get into the lyrics, Cuties!

Here are the lyrics in the opening hook:

"How can I love somebody else If I can't love myself enough to know when it's time...Time to let go..."

The first verse starts off with a healthy serving of emotional intelligence. What a profound question to ask yourself. She's critically thinking about how she can practice self-love through bounadaries. According to the definition of Emotional Intelligence, this is wellness in action.

According to Oxford Language, Emotional Intelligence is defined as:

The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

When Mary asks how she can love herself she is expressing her emotions. She is also exemplifying the interpersonal relationship she has with herself as she considers what 'loving herself' looks like if she doesn't have what it takes to leave a relationship.

Let's look at other Emotionally intelligent parts of the song.

There are a ton of 'Feel Cute™' moments in this part of the hook.

Mary is speaking on the interpersonal relationship she has with herself. She expresses that being 'happy' looks like 'finding a love that's her' and that doing so would be 'so sweet.' So much self-awareness goes into knowing things like this about yourself. And to be able to express it out loud in order to manifest it provides a powerful example of how our emotions can shape the world around us.

Let's dig into some more lyrics, Cutie:

Oh, I cannot hide the way I feel inside; I don't know why, but every day I wanna cry; But if I give you one more try; To these rules, will you abide, And if I mean anything to you; Would it make everything all right"

Peep the first line in these lyrics. It's so hard to hide the way we feel. That's probably why she wrote that. The song seems to take a pivot considering she's talking about crying and giving someone a chance. Clearly someone hurt her and she is allowing her concerns - which might be routed in emotions like fear or anxiety - to incite her to express her boundaries where she offers one more try to get things right with her. That? That is emotional intelligence in action and communicating like this is a great way to get your emotional needs met and practice emotional intelligence at the same time!
